Romana’s Chronicles – 3
Burn, Baby, Burn… Tips to Burn Better and Longer and the Do’s and Don'ts of Candle Care.
There’s nothing quite like the soft glow and inviting aroma of an artisanal scented soy candle. At Romana’s, we craft each candle with care, using high-quality soy wax, clean-burning wicks, and thoughtfully blended fragrances to elevate your space. To help you enjoy your candle to the fullest — and make it last as long as possible — we have put together a few simple but essential tips.
1. Trim the Wick Before Each Burn
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 6 mm. This small step helps prevent soot buildup on the glass, reduces flickering, and ensures a steady, even burn. A properly trimmed wick also helps your candle last longer and smell better.
2. Let the Wax Pool
For the first burn, be sure to let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the container. This usually takes 1–3 hours, depending on the size of the candle. Why does this matter? Wax has a “memory.” If you blow the candle out too early, it may create a tunnel for future burns, wasting precious wax around the edges.
3. Burn in 2–4 Hour Intervals
Avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Long burns can cause the wick to “mushroom,” leading to soot and an uneven flame. For optimal performance, aim for sessions of 2–3 hours. Always allow the candle to cool and solidify between burns.
4. Keep It Away from Drafts
Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from fans, open windows, or busy walkways. Drafts can cause uneven burning, soot, and even make the flame dangerously high.
5. Snuff It Out Gently
Blowing out your candle can send soot into the wax and affect the scent over time. Instead, use a candle snuffer or gently dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it afterward. This helps maintain the integrity of the wick for your next burn.
6. Store It Smartly
When not in use, cover your candle with its lid (if it has one) or store it in a cool, dry place. This protects the fragrance and keeps dust out of the wax. Soy candles can be sensitive to sunlight and heat, which may cause discoloration or a change in scent.
7. Know When It’s Done
When only 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom, it is time to stop burning. This prevents the container from overheating or cracking. The good news? You can repurpose the jar — we encourage reusing or recycling it creatively!
